X-Men Apocalypse

X-Men Apocalypse, directed by Bryan Singer and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaacs and... Well... A shed tone of others who I'd spend forever to list. It tells the story of Apocalypse, the first mutant, way back in ancient Egypt, who has risen again and is hell bent on causing apocalyptic nonsense.

Why? Well... I don't really know. The motivation behind Apocalypse's actions, just aren't really there. He rises from the grave, enslaves 3 mutants or "horsemen" who are kind of forgettable as one another. Oh, and Michael Fassbender's Magneto. Who we'll get back to later. This is my biggest problem with this movie and one I've been trying to put into words for a while now. I can't think of any other way to put it other than, "Apocalypse was shit." That's the unfortunate by and large of it. They took Oscar Isaacs, an actor I really love, and turn him into this massive purple mess of a monster with no discernible motivations for any of his actions throughout the movie whatsoever. It was really getting to me! He just stood around with his random ass group of powers, looking smaller and less physically intimidating than his horsemen and said basically only the lines in the trailers! No part of him made sense.

The pacing to this movie was really off putting too. Like an hour and 20 minutes in me and my girlfriend were just looking at our watches and huffed. They hadn't even got Apocalypse and his horsemen together or set up the conflict between them and the X-men properly.

There is so much in terms of characters that Bryan Singer had to fit in and give ample screen time to and unlike with Civil War, he really wasn't able to do so. I don't think I would be able to name all of the horsemen or the CIA woman friend of Professor X. So much was tried to squeeze into this film, and so much didn't stick with me. For instance, Wolverines cameo was nothing short of gratuitous. There was no point in having it, apart from hopefully setting up the last Wolverine movie, and it really didn't make sense. Like- wasn't it actually Mystic that fished Wolverine out of the river at the end of Days of Future Past and not the General guy? That third of the movie in the army base felt pointlessly forced. I suppose because of the end credits scene only time will tell if I am right about that.

One point- and it's not a wholey bad I think- is about Quicksilver. Now I think Marvel definitely kept the best version of that character when they offed Aaron-Taylor Johnson's MCU version in Age of Ultron. I love how they used this version in Days of Future Past and the slow mo stuff was so cool but they do use him and that technique a bit more in this movie and I think it would've only been one more slow mo sequence from getting on my nerves. Just a word of warning on that one Fox. People like it but please don't overdo it.

There are a few saving graces for this otherwise poor movie and that's in some of the performances. Magneto was really the only place where this movie pacts an emotional punch. The story with his family and life in Poland got the tears streaming for me and gives Fassbender time to do what he does best and that's give a fantastic Shakespearean-esq monologue. James McAvoy is great as ever despite the fact that Professor X is reduced to little more than a Maguffin in this movie. He's solid as always with what he's given. I enjoyed Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and can't wait to see more of her. Jennifer Lawrence is in this movie being well... Jennifer Lawrence. And I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. I can't really say much about the guy who played Scott Summers because to be honest he was pretty forgettable.

So to conclude, Apocalypse has some great performances by the lead two and a select few others but that really doesn't take away from this movie being a bit of a wreck mainly because of a TERRIBLE villain and poor pacing. Visually it looks good too but the story just isn't there and by the end of it me and my girlfriend were just happy to get out of there.

X-Men Apocalypse was such a disappointment and for me it has to get a solid F. It was so bad. That was two and a bit hours I'm never getting back. If you haven't seen it I pray to you, don't.
