Captain America: Civil War
Okay so 'Captain America:Civil War' is the direct sequel to the 2014 superhero masterclass that was The Winter Soldier and an indirect sequel to last years 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' which is directed by returnees Joe and Anthony Russo. In this Steve Rogers is continuing to train the new Avengers (Scarlet Witch, Vision, War Machine and Falcon) with Scarlet Johannson's Black Widow when suddenly disaster strikes again and public opinion towards the Avengers slips given the battles in New York, Sokovia and Washington DC. People want the Avengers to be accountable to the United Nations and only called into action when a UN Committee decides it is necessary. The leader of the Avengers, Captain America, disagrees with what is named the 'Sokovia Accords' whereas Iron Man, the Avengers bank roller, sides with the government after his conscious is shocked after the events he created in Sokovia. And hence, the other Avengers all take sides and a civil war ensues when Steve's old friend Bucky, The Winter Soldier, resurfaces.
Now although I was looking forward to this as I loved the original Civil War comic book I was in fact apprehensive after last years Avengers sequel. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Age of Ultron a lot but some of the story elements didn't quite sick with me. It was crowded and bloated with characters and instead of giving each character the appropriate amount of screen time and character arcs, Joss Whedon gave too many of the main cast hefty amounts of screen time and chunky character arcs. Obviously given the stellar cast of this film you can forgive my worrying. So many chunky elements were coming together in this movie such as Black Panther's origin story, the introduction to a new Spider-man, the civil war between Stark and Rogers, the continuation of Bucky Barnes' story arc, Helmut Zemo's evil plan as well as balancing a massive 12 superheroes as well as a bursting supporting class. The Russo Brothers also needed to continue the fantastic sense of gritty realism that they began in the last Captain America movie. A mammoth task and one that the directors succeed at beautifully.
Before this I deemed 'The Winter Soldier' as the best Marvel movie. There is a new champion in my mind.
The central argument is presented in such a way that both Captain America and Iron Man seem like they're in the right and I hate to compare but that is something that Batman V Superman never seemed to get right. This makes for a really compelling battle between the two heavyweights of the MCU. If you don't swap and change between team Cap and team Iron Man then are you even watching the same movie?
Then there are the two major newbees. Spider-Man and Black Panther. Do they work? You bet they do. Spider-Man gets around half an hour screen time and oh my god, Tom Holland, he's the Spider-Man we deserve. There's one line he shares with Tony Stark, basically a rehash of the classic "with
great power comes great responsibility" line and just the way it's delivered gives Peter Parker ten times better character development than that character has achieved in five Sony movies. I can't wait for Homecoming! Black Panther was unbelievably badass. My favourite new addition to the MCU. That's all I will say.
Anthony and Joe Russo I applaud you gentlemen! My fears around too many elements coming together were completely unfounded. Each and every character gets the appropriate amount of screen time and no one character has an arc that's trying to be more than it is. And the action sequences? Amazing. The airport scene that's teased in trailer is the best action scene in the MCU and the good news is that it's not the final sequence. They bring all the elements together for quite an intimate final act. Which is really good considering the growing avant garden nature of MCU final acts.
So in conclusion the pacing is great, the central argument is well formed, the new additions are stars and the action is great. If you haven't already seen it you should definitely go and find it online or in a theatre somewhere. It is definitely a good time and definitely rated an...
