Okay no movie is without sin and definitely not ones in the Star Wars universe so I've had my power nap, mulled this shit over and now it's time to bash this one out and await the cascade of crap from all of my friends and family. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaacs, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher (le cry) and Mark Hamill and is the continuation of Episode 7. I've promised to make this spoiler free, as all my reviews always are, so unfortunately that is all I can say about the plot because as a lot of you expected there is much to spoil here. Justice League is the fifth entry into the DC film universe directed by Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon and stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Ray Fisher, Ezra Miller and Jason Mamoa as the titular group of heroes. The movie follows Batman/ Bruce Wayne as he tries to unite the League in order to stop the threat posed by Steppenwolf (played by Ciaran Hinds) and his legion of Parademons.  A lot was riding on this flick. Batman Versus Superman and Suicide Squad were met with decidedly mixed to negative reviews from both fans and critics and Warner Brothers needed to prove that the success of Wonder Woman wasn't just a one time thing. The production was somewhat moored with problems as Zack Snyder had to leave the directors chair after his daughter tragically committed suicide. Joss Whedon stepped in to direct extensive reshoots and the post production process so needless to say I was going in with some apprehension. WARNING: The following 1,000 words or so may cause offence to butt hurt Marvel fanboys. I ain't sticking this one on a pedestal guys! So Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Kleimtiff, Karen Gillian, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Elizabeth Debicki and holy crap that's a large main cast list. The story follows the Guardians of the first movie as they meet Ego, played by Kurt Russell, who (as all the trailers show you) is Peter Quill's father. Okay so I feel like I'm literally the last person to see this movie. I've just been putting it off and off and off for weeks now but I did it, I watched it, and it was fucking awesome. So even if no ones gonna read this review because you've all seen it anyway then I'm still gonna write it anyway cause I love what I do. It stars British actor Daniel Kaluuya (of Black Mirror fame) who is in an interracial relationship with Allison Williams' character. They're going for a weekend away at Williams' parents house and Kaluuya is concerned that his partner hasn't told her parents that he's black. For anyone who knows me well enough, or reads this blog on a regular basis, I love movies. I love watching them, reviewing them and dissecting what they mean in minute detail. I'm a cinephile through and through and I'm not afraid to shout it from every rooftop in all the land. To me, movies are the most misunderstood form of art that humans perceive and when I talk to people in depth about film, I get a lot of blank stares. It's cool to read and discuss books at length and talk through the characters and the themes. You're somewhat revered if you can discuss a painting in great detail. Paterson is directed by Jim Jarmusch and stars Adam Driver in the titular role as Paterson. Paterson is very much an everyman who drives a bus, goes to the pub, walks his dog, writes poetry and goes home to his loving wife and this movie is exactly one week in the life of Paterson. A lot of critics that I've talked to or read reviews from, hated the Boss Baby right from the get go, from minute one of the first trailer, and I really don't understand why. This concept sounds fucking great. Alec Baldwin as a middle management type talking baby in a suit? Fucking brilliant. The Boss Baby is the newest animation from the people at DreamWorks and stars Toby Macguire and Alec Baldwin as a baby boss who's sent to this family who work for their competitors, a company who sells puppies. The baby is tasked with gaining intel on the puppy companies latest project as Baby Co are worried that all the love for babies is being stolen by puppies. Power Rangers is directed by Dean Israelite and stars Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, Dacre Montgomery and Naomi Scott amongst many others and is based off the 90s American children's TV series about teenagers who find power coins of different colours and are recruited by an alien named Zordon to fight in a war against Rita Repulsa. Now I just want to take a moment to run through my thoughts going into this movie. I loved the Power Rangers series growing up, despite what my parents would say. I remember rushing back from school every day and fighting with my sister for control over the remote just so I can watch one episode of Mighty Morphin'. So when I heard they were doing a reboot movie I was over the moon. I knew what I was going to get though. Life is directed by Daniel Espionoza and stars Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhall and Rebecca Fergeson as astronauts on the International Space Station. They intercept a returning probe from Mars and inside the soil samples they find a tiny organism. They nuture it, it escapes and well... shit ensues. Yeah no. Life's not worth your money. The biggest problem is I feel like it skipped the entirety of its first act. The movie seems to be devoid of any time spent with the characters before shit kicks off so any deaths or revelations later on have no weight behind them whatsoever. To give some perspective to my comments about the first act being missing, the alien creature gets out and starts killing people about 10 minutes into the movie. Visually it's a stunning movie as you can see from the trailers but the direction I felt was pretty poor. Logan! Logan is directed by James Mangold and stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E.Grant and Hugh Jackman in his final stint as Logan or as we all know him better, the Wolverine. Now this is the third standalone Wolverine movie and the umpteenth time that Jackman has appeared as the character in the X-Men/Fox universe. The story follows old man Logan and a very ill Professor X and their attempts to help this little girl called Laura get to safety. Logan is beaten down both physically and mentally and initially he doesn't want anything to do with Laura. It's all about Logan's journey of discovery and how he bonds with Laura and sympathises with her situation. It's a simple story, road trip movie but don't be fooled. 'Class' is the new spin-off of Doctor Who written by YA novelist Patrick Ness and stars Katherine Kelly, Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins, Vivian Oprah and Fady Elsayad. It follows aliens, Miss Quill and Charlie, and students April, Tanya and Ram as they face off with invaders and other such monsters that decide to venture through the cracks in time (or the bunghole) that have developed at the Coal Hill Academy. Coal Hill has been a regular location used in Doctor Who since the very first episode way back in 1963 and apart from the Peter Capaldi that is pretty much all the link we get to the parent show. This may seem like it would be in detriment to the series but in fact I think it's quite the opposite. The world and the ethos that the series has created and crafted is really quite astonishing.
